An Opinion On Ridiculous Romance Movies....

Don’t you hate those movies where two people are in love and but neither one of them tells the other? Then one person leaves the other person a note confessing their affection, but then the second person never gets the note. So he goes on with his life thinking that she does not love him, but rather she is getting back together with her old boyfriend—who in reality is a jerk and she would never go back with him anyway.

So she goes away ready to be alone and heartbroken. And he lets her leave ready to be heart broken and alone. Then all of the sudden, in a serendipitous chance the best friend tells the boy about the all-revealing-proclamation-of-love note the girl left and he realizes that all along she was in love with him! But oh no! She is about to leave on a jet plane to live forever in some part of the world where there is neither phone nor internet nor mailmen! So he rushes out the door and in a mad dash across the congested streets of New York city, (where I must tell you he almost died twice, once by a pickup truck filled with apples and once by a red Toyota Camry driven by a half blind old man) he goes after her.

He reaches her in almost unbelievable timing, in the airport terminal as she is about to board the plane which will take her away to this obscure country forever and ever. She is shocked to see him. Even more shocked as he confesses his violent passion to her which she pretends she is unaffected by, refusing to believe him (because of course she is angry at him for hurting her, but still violently in love with him as well and doesn't want to hope that his words are really true. And we act so silly when we are in love, don’t we?) And instead of believing her apparent apathy to his affirmation of love, the hero does not give up and finally wins over the heart of his beloved, of course not before proving his love by doing some great, ridiculous feat of passion, such as getting shot by the government or throwing himself in front of the airplane…

And I am left feeling like this whole mess was a waste of time. This whole misunderstanding might have been avoided if they had JUST BEEN HONEST AND OPEN in the beginning! But then if they had, there wouldn't have been a very long movie. And most people don’t like to watch movies that are only five minutes long.

Think about all the popular love stories:
The Notebook: If they had just MET once Noah would have told Allie that he was still in love with her and they would have realized that the stupid mother was behind Allie’s silence in regard to Noah’s letters.

Pirates of the Caribbean: If Elizabeth and Will had just been open with each other and explained that they were only trying to move ahead in the game by cheating, threatening, and being deceitful with one another, they might have built a stronger trust and when Will saw Elizabeth making out with Jack he would have realized that she was only trying to kill him.

Sense and Sensibility: If Edward had told his sister to leave him alone and give him the chance to explain to Elinor the complicated situation with Lucy, Elinor would have been spared months and months of grief while she was fettered under the bondage of Lucy’s confidence.

Tristan and Isolde: If Tristan had been honest with his step-father and explained how he and Isolde were passionately in love, then Lord Mark would have let them be together and would not have married Isolde which consequently led to the Irish attacking the kingdom and everyone being killed.

Titanic: If Rose had let Jack take turns sitting upon the table and not letting him stay in the sub-zero waters the whole time then MAYBE he would have lived.

Sigh. What is the deal people? Why didn’t anyone COMMUNICATE with each other?! It would have made things so much simpler. People would have been happy! Because of course in Hollywood, avoidance of heart-rending, emotionally taunting, tragic drawn out tales of love, loss, pride, honor and complicated circumstances is exactly what that multi-billion dollar industry is all about.

If you like someone, tell them. If you don’t, tell them. If you are having a problem which may or may not lead to them jumping to conclusions and hopping a plane to Barbados, then TELL THEM! Being with someone shouldn’t be so complicated and so mysterious and so problematic that it causes all these plot line which pay ridiculous actors their ridiculous salaries.

But people will be people I suppose. They will have their pride, their honor, their point of view, their misunderstandings, their hurts, and their frustrations. There will be drama, I suppose. I just wish more people would be sensible and realize the freedom which communication and honesty brings. I shall never understand this world!
